Wilmington Island, Georgia.
Edwin Williams Carson, Jr., age 89, died peacefully on Monday, July 12, 2010, under the care of Hospice Savannah. He was a native and lifelong resident of Savannah and Wilmington Island.
Eddie was a veteran of World War II. He left his work in the Savannah ship yards to enlist in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country for three years, and served aboard the USS Honolulu during the Philippine Liberation. Petty Officer First Class Carson received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with Bronze Star and the Victory Medal. After returning from service, he joined his family in owning and operating Carson Boat Company on Wilmington Island.
Having lived on the water most of his life, he had a great love of boating and fishing. He was a master marine carpenter and built many sailboats and motorboats during his lifetime. He was a past member of the Savannah Yacht Club and the Geechee Sailing Club, and won many awards for racing sailboats and speedboats. Later in life, he revived an earlier passion and became an avid golfer and a member of Bacon Park Golf Course.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Marguerite "Bobbie" Carson; his first wife and the mother of his children, Corene Smith Carson; his father, Edwin Williams Carson, Sr.; his mother, Esther Hoy Carson; his brother John Avery Gere Carson; his sister, Carrie Carson Lynch and his stepson, Robert H. Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Carson Bisbee and husband Paul Bisbee of Pike Road, Alabama; his son, Edwin Williams Carson, III and wife Pat Fondren Carson of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; his stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Jeanie Smith Zadach and Stephen W. Zadach of Savannah; grandchildren, Stephen Carson Bisbee, Diane Barrientos, Walter S. Smith, Robert H. Smith, Charles D. Smith, Edwin A. Smith, Katherine Smith Mordecai and Jeffrey B. Zadach; and longtime friend and neighbor, Randolph Gould.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to Wesley Oak United Methodist Church, 3124 E. Victory Drive, Thunderbolt, Georgia 31404 or Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 on July 15 at Greenwich Cemetery in Thunderbolt with Reverend Lynn Drake officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service.
